What is speech therapy?
How can one get into speech therapy?
Speech and language therapy is medical rehabilitation provided by a speech, language, and communication expert; a certified Speech Therapist. Adult neurological speech therapy is targeted at a communication and/or swallowing difficulty caused by an illness or injury, such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Speech and language therapy is aimed at promoting an individual's readiness and abilities for reciprocal, rewarding communication. Consequently, the nearly exclusive focus of the therapy is on comprehensive rehabilitation and development of communication skills in general, not just speech.
Speech and language therapy is a target-oriented operation, and the people close to the patient and the communication environments play important roles in reaching the goals set. Therefore, the goals of the therapy are always set alongside the patient and the people close to him or her, and the approach used in the therapy is comprehensive and customer-oriented.
Speech and language therapy is medical rehabilitation. In Finland, it usually is initiated with a guarantee of payment from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland, city, municipality, or possibly insurance company.
